FWS Imposes Trade Restrictions

on CITES-Listed Wildlife

from Nigeria

 

 

 

The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has issued a notice to the wildlife import and export community announcing that the U.S. has imposed trade restrictions on Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species – (CITES-) listed wildlife from Nigeria.

 

According to FWS, notice has been received from the CITES Secretariat that Nigeria and the Secretariat have agreed that insufficient progress has been made by Nigeria in relation to its action plan to improve implementation of CITES.

 

Imports, Exports, and Re-Exports Involving Nigeria are Prohibited, Etc.

 

Effective immediately, FWS states that the U.S. will prohibit any import from, and export or re-export to, Nigeria of CITES-listed specimens.  The U.S. will also prohibit the commercial re-export of CITES-listed specimens with an origin of Nigeria until further notice. 

 

Shipments are Subject to Seizure and Forfeiture

 

FWS states that any such shipments (as described above) are subject to seizure and forfeiture.
